Status: National Park since 1993
Size: 560 sq km
Elevation: 1110 - 1590 meters
Habitat: 77% of the forested section of the park is occupied by medium altitude moist evergreen forest in the north, and medium altitude moist semi-deciduous forest at lower altitudes in the south. The rest of the park consists of swamps, grassland and some plantations with exotic conifers.
Fauna: 13 primate species are resident in Kibale forest including chimpanzees, Guereza Colobus, Olive Baboon, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, L'Hoest's Gentle ( Blue) and Red-tailed Monkeys among others. Bushbuck, Harvey's and Peter's, buffaloes, elephants, common duiker, bush pigs, and leopards are other inhabitants of the forest. The guided night walks are also rewarding with Pottos, Spectacled Davidoff’s and Thomas's Galagos, Lord Derby's Anomalure, African Civet and Common Genet.
335 bird species have been recorded in Kibale Forest national park. The best birding period is between March - May, and September – November. The ideal birding duration is 2 days.
Key Bird Species include Green-breasted Pitta, African Pitta, Red-winged Francolin, Red-chested Flufftail, White-napped Pigeon, Joyful Greenbul, Grey-winged Robin, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Grey-throated Flycatcher, White-bellied Crested Flycatcher, Masked and Black-capped Apalises, Uganda Woodland Warbler, Chestnut-winged Starling, Orange-tufted and Tiny Sunbirds, Grey-headed Olive-back.
