2 Days Birding Tour in Mabamba

This 2 Days tour takes you birding in Entebbe and Mabamba Wetland in Uganda with African Birding Journeys. The Mabamba wetland are renowned for hosting the rare Shoebill Stork and is famous to be blessed with a variety of bird species. Mabamba Islands has grown into one of the most interesting and spectacular tourist sites for birding. Apart from Murchison Falls National Park, Mabamba is the only place rated as the best in African or in the world where the elusive shoebill can be easily spotted at any one time of the day. Apart from the rare shoebill, there are many other bird species to see on this adventure!

  • Detailed Itinerary

    Day 1: Birding in Entebbe’s UWEC & Botanical Gardens
    You will be welcomed by our representative who will transfer you to your respective place of accommodation in Entebbe. Depending on the time of arrival you might spend the afternoon at UWEC, home to captive animals and over 170 species of birds. These include 7 species of weavers, such as the rare Northern Masked Weaver and Orange Weaver, Kingfishers, Sunbirds etc. Dinner and o/n at Sophie’s Motel or Lindsay Cottages.

    Enjoy a delicious breakfast then continue to Entebbe Botanical Gardens. Here you will have good hours of birding on the best trails around Kampala, with over 150 species of birds. Look out for the Bare faced-go away bird, Great Blue and Ross’s Turacos, Red Chested, Klaas’s and Diederik Cuckoo, Great Reed Warbler, Fain Tailed Widow bird, Striped, Malachite, Giant, Woodland and Pygmy Kingfishers, Black Bishop, Grey Woodpecker, Olive, Olive bellied, Red chested, superb, Copper etc Sunbirds and many more. A picnic Lunch in the gardens, relax while birding and later in the evening return to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

    Day 1: Mabamba Island & the Search for Shorbills
    Early transfer to Mabamba Swamp, 50 kms west of Kampala. Look out for many different birds on our way to the swamp like the Papyrus Gonolek, White Shouldered Tit, Red Cap, Western Banded Snake Eagle, White Winged Warbler, White Spotted Fluftail and Weyns Weaver. This Swamp is one of the best places to spot the exceptional Shoebill Stork. But also many other species can be found here, like the Allen’s and Purple Gallinule, Grey herons, Jacanas, Ruffaus  Bellied Heron, Squaco, Purple and Goliath Heron, the Globally threatened Pallid Harrier and Blue Swallow a migrant species, a variety of egrets, ducks etc. The best way to enjoy the rich bird life is by canoe and you might even have the luck to encounter the elusive Sitatunga Antelope, adapted to swampy habitats. Later in the afternoon drive back to the Hotel birding enroute for dinner and o/n stay.
